Tena koe,
Well done on such an informative current affairs programme.
As someone who doesn't watch a lot of TV, I am really impressed with today's show.
The realness and quality of the panel were refreshing - it was great to watch such well articulated men sharing their opinions on important topics.
I also found the debating was well facilitated by Willie - I enjoyed its lightheartedness.
Thank you - and I may tune in next week!

Dear Willie,

Concerning special Maori representation, New Zealand owes its present culture to both Maori and the British Crown, who by the Treaty of Waitangi, conferred the rights of British citizens on both Maori and Pakeha, and subsequently the citizenship of a self-governing Member of the British Commonwealth. Maori, as defined by their culture, number more than 25% of the population, and so should expect at least 25% representation in the Auckland super City in a democratic system. The only reason the percentage should be less, is that Maori do not stand for election, or that the candidates you put up are inferior.
Is this the reason you are insisting on 3 special representatives?

Descendants of immigrants from the United Kingdom now number much less than 75% of the population, but should expect 75% representation. Should we claim 12 special representives.

Second point.

Although Treaty Settlements have been welcomed by Maori in general, they do not appear to have reduced the dissatisfaction of Maori with their situation. Are we wasting our money and good intentions doing this?

Sincerely, Ray Dibble

tena koe Willie,

My apologies for contacting you through this email and not through the eye to eye address as you'll see from Des's email i forgot that address.

I enjoyed your programme on Sunday regarding Maori rugby (or more specifically the New Zealand Maori All Blacks) and would love to get a copy of "Under the Maori Moon". My thoughts on that subject are similar to Jocks? (the pakeha falla) in that it is a racist action as it is a team selected on racial boundaries, however i don't think this is a bad thing and the only reason i use the word racist is because i don't know the correct word (or if there is one) when something racist is a good thing. The thing that people need to be aware of is that this is not the only racially selected team in the country. It also allows people with a mixed heritage (as most Maori are) to play on this team, so you have plenty of half cast pakehas and islanders coming together with a common link, which could never be a bad thing. Hopefully in 20yrs the number of kiwis without any Maori will be a minority (which doesn't mean that they will or should all be available for the maoris, i will get to this later). I know for a fact that there are NZ Samoan, Tongan and Raro teams which i can't play in because i don't have any of that heritage but i don't begrudge that because there is a team of my heritage i can play for. I would also encourage a NZ Irish, Welsh & Scots side the only difference is that they would not be funded through the NZRFU.
Which begs the question. Is that the problem? Do they not want to fund the Maori team anymore? Just on that my personal whakaaro is that the NZRFU do have a responsibility to assist Maori development if not for obvious reasons (the history and number of Maori who play) but as an entity in recognition of the treaty. Funding could be a joint thing between Iwi and the NZRFU?

On another angle i no longer support the Maori team the way i have in the past as i believe the Maori team now is a little token or plastic and this probably aligns with Jocks views about the NZRFU just using the Maori team to promote themselves and not Maori. I took this view when they picked Christian Cullen. What an embarrassment!!! and i know for a fact that there have been others after him. The modern NZ Maori team has players who have never before identified as Maori and i believe are only there because the NZRFU pay them and pay the bills of the Maori selectors or management. You had Tom Mulligan on your programme who is the Patron of my rugby club (Clive) and also kaumatua of my marae (Matahiwi) and I'm afraid i cannot tautoko matua on this subject. My views are shared by other Clive and ex Maori AB's the likes of Gordon Falcon and Orcades Crawford that the current Maori squad does not truly represent Maori. I believe to be eligible for the NZ maoris you should have had to play for your local Maori team or at sometime been available. I know there are players who go through the system as youngsters and don't get the opportunity to play for any of those Maori teams however in most instances they would have always been identified as Maori by people who know them so it does not come as a surprise when they are selected. I look at our own young kahungunu boys, Zac Guildford, Israel Dagg & Daniel Kirkpatrick who have gone through the NZ systems and missed out on the opportunities to play maori rugby, however if they were to be selected in the Maori team it wouldn't be a surprise because all their peers know they are Maori whether they can whakapapa or not they have always acknowledged they were Maori.

My issue with the Maori team is we are currently selecting a few players who i believe lack the wairua of Maori and although they maybe winning games they are not true maoris who can relate to other Maori. And it doesn't matter if they are half or 1/20 Maori i can't understand why they would want to be there if they have never acknowledged they were Maori before. I personally would rather take a team of real maoris and lose than plastic's and win.

In short i think the Maori team is racist but in a good way for the reasons described earlier and i don't see the reason why people from other cultures can not pick their own team? An NZ pakeha team is not logical and cannot not be used as an argument against the NZ Maori team because the pakeha lumps together white New Zealanders and not a specific culture in saying that most NZ Maori would be eligible for that team too.

Just on myself, i am Kahungunu on my mums side and Irish on my dad's side. I went to Hato Paora College and I'm still playing social rugby for Clive. So you can see with these connections it's hard for me to not support the NZ Maori team, but i can't support what i believe is a tokenistic or plastic kaupapa. By the way, the best maori AB on and off the field for me was Frano Botica. Ka mau te wehi a Frano!!!

Hello

I never usually write emails to shows, but wanted to write and say how much in enjoyed "Eye to Eye' April 26th 2009. The show is excellent, and Willie was engaging with all his guests. Willie may not agree with his guests that day namely former MP Stephen Franks, or Cameron Brewer from the Business Association in Newmarket, but he accepts their opinions and raises some great points. I thought that episode was fantastic because it drew a wealth of different views. I was very impressed that Mr Brewer knew the Maori name for Newmarket!

All and all a great show. Keep up the good work!!

with kind regards
